CSKA was trailing 0:2 in a derby against Spartak, tied the score, but lost in OT.
Derby day was the first game for CSKA after IIHF break. Red-blue fans were eager to see their favorites in a clash against archrival, so CSKA ARENA got a full house that night. And of course, more than 10 thousand CSKA fans wanted their team to win.
Armymen, pushed by crowd support, started to generate chances from the opening faceoff. Popov and Sekac could open the score early into the game, but Hudacek denied their efforts. Spartak chose to play on quick counterattacks and their gameplane paid off. Fyodorov made a wrist shot from a faceoff circle and Yunkov tipped the puck past Johansson from up close. Two minutes after Zubov made a quick stride along the left board, found an opening between Johansson's shoulder and the crossbar, and put the puck right there. After such a cold shower CSKA managed to rev up and get one back. Marchenko was the quickest one on the rebound and fired the puck past Hudacek.
During second period CSKA got the game under control and had a plenty of chances to equalize. Popov had a breakaway and could score a shothanded goal after Viklund's mistake, but fired wide. All in all, the score remained the same after 40'.
Third period was similar. CSKA had a huge advantage, but the puck just couldn't cross the goal line. Yet Armymen' work and insistency were rewarded in the dying seconds of regulation. After pulling the goalie, red-and-blue managed to score. Popov found himself alone in front of the net after a couple of bounces and put the puck to the goal.
In OT both teams threw caution to the winds and tried their best to score. Alas, the ones to make it was the away team. Zubov deflected the puck to CSKA net, and after thorough review referies made their decision – the call on the ice stands.
